Project Description

The Bruce  E. Cooper Student Center (Cooper Student Center) was built in 1968 and has been the center of student activities and the heart of student involvement at HACC's Harrisburg Campus. The Cooper Student Center serves more than 7,500 students, 400 full-time faculty and staff and countless visitors throughout the year. The renovation project will provide a "one-stop" center that will include all student services and student activities to accommodate our diverse student body.

The expansion phase will add approximately 5,122 square feet of space to the Cooper Student Center. The additional space will be created by enclosing the existing patio and balcony on the east side of the building. The new space will be incorporated into the overall floor space of the building where a variety of offices and support space for student clubs and organizations will exist.

The renovation phase will encompass the majority of the existing building. Priorities include:

1.  Mechanical systems in the building:

  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)

2. The layout of the building will be designed to provide the following features:

  • First Floor: The welcome center, admissions, financial aid and the disability services office
  • Second Floor: Counseling and advising, career services, global education, military and veterans affairs, student government offices and student club space
  • A variety of comfortable and appealing lounge spaces
  • A space for recruiters to showcase the campus
  • A computer lab for:
    • Financial aid workshops
    • Orientation to HACC's computer systems for students
    • Advising and registration sessions
(The lab will also be available for students when it is not in use for the aforementioned activities.)
  • A refreshed food service venue that includes The Chef's Apprentice and SUBWAY
  • The PSECU student banking center
  • Flexible meeting spaces
  • Storage space

Completion of the project will enable the Cooper Student Center to more adequately provide the facilities, services and programs needed to support the needs of our diverse student population as well as the broader campus community.
