From battlefield tours to horticulture, HACC announces non-credit offerings

July 2, 2007
Take time out this summer with a noncredit course offering from HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College. The Gettysburg Campus, at 731 Old Harrisburg Road, will offer a variety of topics from conversational Spanish and Horticulture to battlefield tours led by licensed guides.

The college's popular summer series of Gettysburg Battlefield Tours continues with "July 1: A Pivotal Battle at Gettysburg." Scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 11, the course will take a look at the events that forced General Lee to fight a battle at Gettysburg on July 1 and what reasons compelled him to continue the battle once he arrived. The cost of the tour, which begins at McPherson's Woods, is $30.

This summer marks the 10-year anniversary of the publication of "Devil's Den: A History and Guide." Since then much new information has been learned on the area's history, as well as the fighting that occurred there. Join authors Timothy H. Smith and Garry Adelman in their anniversary celebration as they walk the den and examine new discoveries made by themselves and others during the last 10 years. The tour is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 18. It will begin at the iron "Devil's Den" sign in front of the massive wall of boulders known as "Devil's Den." The cost is $30.

"A Combined and Concentrated Fire: Artillery on the First Day at Gettysburg" will review the role played by the Union and Confederate artillery during the opening phase of the Battle of Gettysburg. Participants will explore the organization of the "Long Arm" in both armies, the types of cannon employed on the field and the tactics used. The tour is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 25. It will begin at the West End Guide Station on Route 30. The cost to register is $30.

Explore the mysteries and histories of the monuments on the Gettysburg Battlefield during "Monument Madness: Testimony of the Silent Sentinels." The course will provide a unique look at these proud columns of granite and figures of bronze that dot the battlefield landscape. Discover monuments that were removed or altered, visit several off the beaten path, and study the symbolism contained on some and the stories they were intended to tell. The course is scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1. The cost is $30.

Most historians discuss the final Confederate assault on the Union line on July 3, 1863, through the eyes of General Pickett's men and the Union forces that repulsed them, hence the misnomer: Pickett's Charge. "We Measured Their Casualties by Yards: The Story of the 14th Connecticut Volunteers in the Battle of Gettysburg" will focus on their contribution to ultimate Union victory. The tour is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8. It will begin at the flagpole at the Cyclorama Building. The cost to register is $30.

While the main attack on July 2 was against the Union left, some very significant action was also occurring on the Union right and resumed on the morning of July 2 with a definite impact on the outcome of the Battle of Gettysburg. "Culp's Hill: The Fight on the Union Right" will take a closer look at this part of the Battlefield and the men from both sides who fought there. The tour is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15. It will begin at the East Confederate Wayside just past the Kefauver School on the right and the Culp Farm off to the left. The cost is $30.

"Command (In) decisions at Gettysburg" will examine the major command (in)decisions by Sickles, Longstreet, Reynolds, Lee and others that affected the Battle of Gettysburg. The tour is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22. It will begin at the flagpole at the Cyclorama Building. The cost is $30.

In "Introduction to Horticulture" students will learn the basics in plant identification, nomenclature, botany, soils, nutrients, fertilizers, pests, disease, propagation, composting, pruning and balanced water gardens. They also will sprout unknown seeds and identify the plant that is produced. The course is scheduled for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Thursdays, Aug. 30 to Oct. 4. The cost is $125.

"Conversational Spanish I" is a level-one, beginning conversational Spanish course. It will be offered at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 6-29. Textbook information will be included in the confirmation letter. The cost is $125.
