HACC Gettysburg Sponsors Black History Events

Feb. 5, 2007
Story teller Charlotte Blake Alston presents traditional and contemporary stories from the African and African American oral and cultural traditions at HACC-Gettysburg Campus on Thursday, February 22. Performances are scheduled from noon-12:30 pm and 1-1:30 pm in Community Room 109. A question-and-answer session and light lunch will be provided from 12:30-1.

The performances are open to the community at no charge. To assure an adequate lunch count, individuals or groups who plan to attend during the lunch period are asked to respond to 337-3855, ext. 3029.

Charlotte is a Philadelphia-based storyteller, narrator and singer who has taught from the preschool through graduate levels. She tours and performs at national and regional festivals, schools, universities, museums, libraries and performing arts centers throughout the United States and Canada, as well as with local and national radio and television. She has received numerous honors including the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Artist of the Year Award.

Charlotte's performance is supported in part by the Adams County Arts Council's STAR Grant Program, which is funded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, the Adams County Commissioners, and the Borough of Gettysburg.

"The Faces of Burundi," a photography exhibit by Dr. Nanette Hatzes, is also featured at HACC-Gettysburg Campus through February 28, in conjunction with Black History Month 2007. Nanette is Director of the Learning Center at Shippensburg University and is also an avid photographer. One of the photographs in her exhibit, "Mother and Child, Kiganda, Burundi," was awarded first prize in the third annual Adams County Arts Council Juried Fine Arts Show and Sale in October of 2006.

Burundi is one of the poorest and most conflict-ridden countries in Africa and in the world. Nanette will use profits from photography sales to support the efforts of the Burundi Education Project which provides language skills and books for Burundian students.

Exhibit hours are Monday through Thursday 8 am to 8:30 pm, Fridays 8 am to 5 pm and Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm. HACC-Gettysburg Campus is located at the North Gettysburg Center on Old Harrisburg Road, near Weis Markets and Adams County National Bank. For information, call 717-337-3855.
