Harrisburg Campus of HACC offers upcoming community education classes

Jan. 8, 2007
Upcoming noncredit community education classes offered by the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, are a great way to pursue your own interest or start something completely new and different.

Meeting new people with similar interests, getting physically fit and learning new things are just a few incentives. A sampling of upcoming classes includes aquatic exercise classes and youth swimming instruction, conversational language classes and classes on investing.

Aquasize will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 26-April 9, 4:45-5:45 p.m. Cost is $59. This is an invigorating deep-water exercise to improve muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness. Flotation belts keep students upright with arms and legs free for various movements and a full-body workout including abdominals.

Fluid Fitness will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 26-April 9, 5:50-6:35 p.m. Cost is $33. This deep-water class includes cardio intervals for heart health and smooth moves for muscle tone. Flotation belts suspend students as they walk, jog and run in a no-impact environment.

Water Explore/Primary Skills will be offered Mondays, Feb. 12-April 16, 6:45-7:40 p.m. Cost is $110. This is an adult level 1 and 2 swimming class held in shallow water for those with no aquatic skills or can swim a bit but are not comfortable in deep water.

A variety of Youth Swimming - Red Cross Certified classes will be offered Feb. 11-April 22 during the afternoons, including Parent and Child Aquatics (Ages 4 and 5), Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills, Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills, Level 3: Stroke Development, Level 4: Stroke Improvement and Level 5, Stroke Refinement. Cost of all classes is $90, except Parent and Child Aquatics, which is $70.

An increasingly popular way to get fit is through dance. HACC will offer several classes including Intro to Ballroom/Rhythm Dance, Sundays, Feb. 4-March 4, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Cost is $60. This class teaches the social skill of ballroom dance with beginning instructions in Foxtrot, Waltz, Rumba, Cha-Cha and Tango. Dress shoes are preferred over sneakers.

Latin Dancing for Beginners will be offered on Sundays, Feb. 4-March 4, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Cost is $60. This class focuses on the Rumba, Cha-Cha, Salsa (Mambo) and Merengue, giving a special Latin flavor to students' newly acquired dance steps. Partners are preferred but not required.

A variety of conversational language courses will be offered that are designed for those age 16 and above, often for travel, to enhance employment qualifications or for personal growth.

Depending on the class, start dates are in January, February or March and cost $125. Conversational language classes available include first level courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Second level courses include Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish.

For those whose New Year's resolutions may have included a focus on reducing credit card debt, as well as learning how to invest, HACC has just the class. Face It - Your Financial Future will be offered for different age levels at the Cornerstone Coffeehouse, Camp Hill. Cost is $35.

In addition to reducing debt, participants will learn what a $1,000 investment can mean in 35 to 40 years. They will learn about investment options, tax benefits of using a 401k, compounding interest, mutual funds, stocks and bonds and diversity vs. "all your eggs in one basket."

Classes will be held on Sundays, Feb. 25, 1-3 p.m., for those ages 25-35; March 4, 1-3 p.m., for those ages 35-45 and March 11, 1-3 p.m., for those ages 45-55.

These are just a few of the community education offerings available along with registration in HACC's winter/spring issue of "Opportunities to Enrich your Personal & Professional Life," a schedule of noncredit classes accessible at the Website below.
