Radius designated 'PA Preferred'

Dec. 6, 2007
Radius, HACC Gallery and Museum Shop at The Pennsylvania State Museum, has a new designation: PA Preferred.

"Our qualification is a result of the rich hand-crafted textile work that we carry, as well as Pennsylvania produced soaps and soy candles," said Jessica L. Lantz, curator of arts and assistant manager.

Visitors can get a special look at the textiles, soap, and candles as well as other unique, handmade and original pieces during an open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Live entertainment, demonstrations by participating artists and refreshments will be offered. A free handmade ornament will be given with purchase, while supplies last.

The state Department of Agriculture's PA Preferred program was established to encourage consumers to purchase Pennsylvania-grown products while guaranteeing those products meet important quality standards. PA Preferred means that at least 60 percent of the raw product was grown and harvested in the commonwealth or (like chocolate) 100 percent of the final manufacturing process and packing was done in Pennsylvania.

The gallery and museum shop, which will celebrate its third anniversary in February, focuses on Pennsylvania artisans and commonwealth-related merchandise. It serves as a sales outlet for merchandise produced by HACC contemporary crafts marketing students as well as select items from the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

Radius, located on the first floor of The State Museum at the corner of Third and North streets, has extended its hours of operation through Dec. 23. The gallery and museum shop is open from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and noon-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Radius and The State Museum are closed on Mondays.
