This is a terrific opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of what to expect from a college level theatre curriculum and to explore the many aspects of theatre offered by HACC's highly regarded Theatre Program, says Brenda Eppley, Professor of theatre and Director of HACC's Theatre for Young People.
Perry County native Melissa Michele Mulkey and Hershey-area resident Adam Newborn know firsthand about the smell of greasepaint and roar of the crowd that thrill thespians the world over.
Mulkey, who earned an associate degree in Performing Arts/Theatre in 2000, and Newborn, a second-year student, found the personal attention and focus provided by the HACC theatre faculty for steering them in the right direction.
"The professors I had ... were able to see the potential I had and not only encouraged me but also inspired me to pursue a career as a make-up artist in film and TV, says Mulkey, a lead instructor for Make-Up Designory in New York City where she also teaches the character make-up class.
Although Mulkey enrolled at HACC to become an actor, she says she "realized my true passion for" theatre make-up after taking an Independent Study class with Eppley, who encouraged Mulkey to continue her theatre pursuit at the LA campus of the Make-Up Designory.
"The skills I walked away with (at HACC), both mental and social, helped me prepare for the demands of working in the entertainment industry," says Mulkey, whose portfolio as a make-up artist and prop fabricator include working on such movies "The Last Samurai," "The Chronicle of Riddick," "Sin City," "Son of the Mask" and "The Haunted Mansion." Her television portfolio includes "CSI Miami," "Charmed," "Without a Trace" and "Dismissed," as well as numerous commercials.
Newborn, a 2006 Hershey High grad, decided to pursue his interest in theatre and dance after his father told him that HACC's theatre program is "stellar."
Newborn credits the quality and diversity of study in HACC's Theatre Program which makes it an extraordinary choice for high school students trying to decide on post-secondary education.
"I think the program really gets you ready for the entertainment business from how to build the perfect resume to learning to be honest in a certain scene from a play," adds Newborn.
"HACC's Theatre Program is easily at the same level as many major universities. The professors challenge you to do your absolute best and always want you to succeed." He says Eppley and theatre staff members Dave Olmsted, Marnie Brennan, Paul Foltz, Lori Friedlander and Angela Ruediger "are there whenever you need help or just need to talk. Because of HACC's staff I know that dreams can become a reality."
Students who are considering a career in one of the theatre arts are invited to Theatre Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 8, on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC.
The event is offered on a first come, first served basis with participants rotating through a variety of workshops that include Acting/Improvisation, Musical Theatre, Stage Lighting, Costume/Scenic Design, Theatre Makeup and Stage Combat. All workshops will be led by HACC theatre faculty in the quality facilities of the Rose Lehman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus.
