Gettysburg, PA – Uncover the mysteries as you discover the facts behind key battles of World War II in a new series offered this fall at the Gettysburg and Harrisburg campuses of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
The series is being offered at the request of many people who have expressed an interest in learning more about our country’s involvement in the war that was precipitated by Japan’s act of aggression in the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
HACC’s Office of Continuing Education has assembled a cadre of instructors to present the series that culminates in a history/educational tour to the Washington, D.C., area on Nov. 14.
Here is the lineup:
  • Battles of World War II – Follow in the footsteps of Edward S. Mehosky, an enlisted officer, as told by his sons in the book, “The Story of a Soldier.” The account follows Mehosky from his joining the peacetime army in 1940, joining the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, and preparing for the war in Europe against Nazi Germany. Participants will learn the three great battles of the 101st, the outcome and the lasting impact of one of the finest fighting outfits ever produced. Classes are offered from 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 30-Oct. 14 in Gettysburg and 7-9 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 1-15, in Harrisburg. Cost is $59. The book is required for the course.
  • ‘For You the War is Over”: The Stalags at Fallingbostel, Germany – Study the stalags from 1937 at a small construction workers’ camp for a nearby German military base through its growth into a huge complex, liberation on April 16, 1945, by the British 7th Armored Division, and post-war days. The class is 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in Harrisburg. Cost is $45.
  •  Uncovering the Greatest Secrets of World War II - Until recently, many of the military intelligence activities conducted during WWII remained classified. A rich and undocumented history related to the interrogation of German, Italian and Japanese prisoners of war has been the subject of research by the National Park Service in Virginia. A site near Mount Vernon, referred during the war only as P.O. Box 1142, was the location of several top-secret military intelligence programs. Find out more during this presentation. The course will be offered from 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in Gettysburg. The cost is $29.
  • Eisenhower and Patton: Comrades in Arms, Comrades in History – This presentation explores the long professional association and close friendship of Generals Dwight Eisenhower and George Patton. They shared experiences with the fledgling U.S. Army Tank Corps during World War I, challenges of the turbulent interwar years, and eventually emerged as the principal military leaders of America’s first battles against the Axis powers in North Africa during World II. The two forged a close bond as they served with the premier soldiers of their era, participated in historic events, and ultimately assumed the responsibility for leading America’s mightiest army. The course will be offered from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Gettysburg.
  • Special Education Tour: A Focus on History, WWII – Whether your focus is on the study of World War II or you are just interested in historical topics, this educational tour has a great deal to offer individual study. The bus leaves the Harrisburg Campus at 6 a.m., picks up passengers at the Gettysburg Campus at 6:45 a.m., and stops for a quick breakfast en route. By 10 a.m., participants will arrive at the new National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico, Va. After lunch (on your own), the bus returns to Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II National Memorial before continuing to the National Holocaust Museum. Participants will have dinner in Georgetown (on your own) before returning to Central Pennsylvania. The one-day bus trip is from 6 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. The cost is $65.
