HARRISBURG – Fair and fluffy or ominous and stormy, Bloomsburg University art professor Vincent Hron’s cloudscape paintings offer a wide range of temperament, beauty and imagery meant to question our social norms.
His work is on display Aug. 23-Sept. 17 in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
The artist will give a free lecture at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center theatre, followed by an open house and reception. The lecture is presented in partnership with HACC’s Live at Rose Lehrman artist series.
Hron’s paintings are influenced by Contemporary Realist artists, such as Andrew Wyeth, and Neo-Expressionist artists who were a dominant force in avant-garde art during the 1980s. He endeavors to imbue daily experiences with heightened significance.
“My objective is to remedy our detachment from the routines of life by revealing their beauty and symbolic potential,” he said. “Toward that end, I have brought historical iconographic traditions into a contemporary context to engage and question cultural assumptions about aesthetics, spirituality, and social responsibility.”
Hron’s subject matter has traditionally dealt with interiors, exteriors and the figure. Recent work delves into the landscape and cloudscape.
Hron received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Upon graduation, he received a graduate scholarship to study for a year at the Statliche Akademi der Bilden den Kunst, in Karlsruhe, Germany.
He exhibits his work nationally and is affiliated with the Uptown Gallery in New York City and the Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, or by appointment; closed during college holidays. For more information, call 780-2435 or e-mail Kim Banister, gallery curator, at kebanist@hacc.edu.
