Fun and growth at HACC summer camps

HARRISBURG –  This summer, the campuses at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, offer school-age youth a number of camps where they can explore new subjects and have fun. The schedule includes:
At the Harrisburg Campus, One HACC Drive
  • Theatre for Young People Summer Theatre Camps
Theatre for Young People was created to offer an affordable venue for area young people to celebrate and gain exposure to every aspect of theatre including acting, dance, makeup, puppetry, playwrighting and designing sets, costumes and light. Youth ranging in age from 7 to 17 can find their creative potential in a series of week-long camps offered from June 14 through Aug.6.

1.      “Sleeping Beauty” at the Fulton ($95)

9 a.m.-approx. 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, for ages 9-12
First day  – Work on your acting skills as you perform scenes from “Sleeping Beauty,” design costumes, learn about props, applying makeup and take backstage tours.
Second day  – Travel with Theatre for Young People to see “Sleeping Beauty” at the Fulton Opera House. Stop for ice cream afterward and discuss the performance.

  • Music Business Summer Camps
Choose from four camps, for ages 14 and above. Camps are $85 and include professional instruction and materials.
 
-          Home and Recording Studio Level 1
Emphasis on creating a usable original recording including acoustics, microphones, mixers, recorders, gain structure and dynamic range.
1-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, June 14-17.
 
-          Home and Recording Studio Level 2
Emphasis on level balancing and frequency distribution. Topics include equalizers, compressors, effects, digital audio and CD authoring.
1-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, June 21-24.
 
-          Songwriting and Composition
Basics of songwriting form and music theory, harmonic and melodic development for popular song composition. At the end of the course, students will present their composition in a recital. Ideal for active music students already performing in high school bands and choruses. All instrumentalists, guitarists and vocalists welcome.
9 a.m.-noon Monday-Thursday, June 21-24.

  • Annual Ultimate Spin Basketball Camp
Harlem Globetrotter Chris “Mr. Handles” Franklin returns this summer for boys and girls ages 9-15. Franklin and fellow pro athletes Arnold “A Train” Bernard and Luis “Trikz” DaSilva. Your child will be taught the skills and techniques of ball handling, shooting and rebounding, while promoting self-esteem, positive life choices and the value of education.
9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, Aug. 2-6, in the James W. Evans Physical Education Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus.
For boys and girls ages 9-15. Space is limited to the first 100 youth who apply. Cost is $150.

  • Midtown Summer Technology Camp
(Held at HACC-Midtown, 1500 North 3rd St., Harrisburg)
9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, July 12-15.
Cost is $199
 
This summer academy is for teens between the ages of 14-17. Today’s cutting edge technology evolves at the speed of light. This camp is geared toward teenagers that thrive on all things technical. Discover the worlds of mechatronics, electrical technology, architecture, engineering, Web development and geospatial technology. Lunch provided.

  • HACC Kids College – Harrisburg Campus

Cost is $119
For ages 8-13
Kids College is an exciting summer program designed to develop and expand students’ interests, spark creativity and provide a unique learning opportunity in a college setting. Kids will have wealth of brand new courses from which to choose to explore the arts, sciences, languages and culture.   • Junior First Responders Camp
8:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, June 21-23 and Thursday, 8:15 a.m.-3:15 p.m., June 24.
Cost is $129
For ages 14-17
Interactive camp that explores the world of first responders: firefighters, EMS, 911 Dispatch and police. Final day includes question and answer session with professionals, lunch and the opportunity to obtain CPR certification.

  • Outdoor Adventure: Hiking and Backpacking (HACC-Harrisburg Campus)

Learn about wilderness survival, wilderness first aid basics, camping and exploring the great outdoors.

For ages 14-17
Learn all the elements of filmmaking, including brainstorming, storyboarding, auditioning, casting, screening scripts, directing, shooting film, editing film and marketing the finished product. Participants must bring a 2GB flash drive, pencils and a notebook.

For ages 12-17
For the beginner or moderate learner, explore music appreciation, learn quick and basic chords and popular riffs and the rock band life. Participants need to bring an acoustic or electric guitar, guitar picks, a tuner, drumsticks, pencils and a notebook.

  • School of Video Game Design
Cost is $99
1-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Aug. 2-5
For ages 14-17
Wonder how video games are made? There are many different ways a computer game is developed. Using a computer program, participants will explore the process of being a gamer designer, from picking the colors to setting the rules.

Understand the fundamental skills of tennis: strokes, serving, volley and lob shots. Racquets and balls are provided, however students may bring their own.
