Sept. 28, 2011
GETTYSBURG – Traditional Latin music, dances and costumes, vibrant artwork, children’s activities, and a variety of Hispanic foods will mark the annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration from 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus.
The celebration will be held in the HUB student center and adjacent exhibit hallway. It is free and open to the community.
The Karen Rodriguez Latin Jazz Ensemble will perform authentic Latin musical styles including salsa, cha-cha, bolero, bossa nova, mambo, rumba, Cuban guaracha, and Latin jazz. The Pasos Caribenos Dance Group of York will return to present traditional folkloric dances from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Spain and Argentina.
A buffet of Hispanic foods from local restaurants will be supplemented with samples of postres (desserts) provided by students in HACC’s Acta non Verba bilingual club, who will also provide a variety of activities for children. HACC students of various nationalities will prepare displays representing their native countries including Puerto Rico, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Chile.
The exhibit hallway features vibrant paintings by York Springs resident Liliana Arias, a native of Colombia. Other artwork on exhibit includes colorful folk-art paintings by local artist Erin Brown, and handcrafted fused glass jewelry by Jan Hughes. The exhibits are on display through Oct. 21 and can be viewed during campus open hours. HACC-Gettysburg Campus is located at 731 Old Harrisburg Road.
