HACC TheatreWorks performs 'Art'

HACC TheatreWorks: "Art"
Feb. 19, 2011
HARRISBURG – HACC TheatreWorks presents “Art,” the Tony award-winning comedy, in the studio theatre of the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6.
“Art” was written by French playwright Yazmina Reza in 1994 and translated by Christopher Hampton. Marnie Brennan, HACC professor of theatre, directs the production.
Three friends converse about a white painting with white stripes that costs a lot of money.
What ensues becomes more about the complexities of friendship and less about debates over artistic values.
The production casts Eric Brown of Carlisle as Marc, Benjamin Roberts of Kinzers as Yvan and Preston H. Schreffler of Enola as Serge.
Due to mature themes and graphic language no one under the age of 18 will be admitted.
“The introduction to this play poses some interesting questions: ‘How much would you pay for an all white painting?’ ‘Would it be considered Art?” said Brennan. “One thinks the whole thing is a huge joke, another sees it as a masterpiece, and the third is left wondering what exactly is the standard by which we judge a work of Art? Or is there a standard? I believe that “Art” gives insight into the human condition and gets people thinking.”
Tickets are $10 and $7 for students. Contact HACC’s box office at 231-ROSE (7673) or go to www.LiveatRoseLehrman.org.
