Local actors perform Hazel Jackson’s play in Women’s History Month event

LANCASTER – Hazel I. Jackson, one of Lancaster’s trailblazers for civil rights and author of several plays, will direct her recent work, “Voices of Freedom & Liberation,” at a free event at the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Actors from the Lancaster community will perform under Jackson’s direction noon-1:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, in the East Building 203 of the campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike.
The play, presented by the Lancaster Campus office of multicultural affairs in recognition of Women’s History Month, presents women from a variety of backgrounds and their struggle and courage that brought about change for women nationally and globally.
Jackson, a native of South Carolina, was the first African-American woman to teach in Lancaster public schools in 1962 and was the first African-American faculty member at Millersville University in 1970, as an assistant professor teaching English and African-American literature. At her retirement in 1994 she was honored by the university with a scholarship in her name and the Hazel I. Jackson Lecture, now held each February during Black History Month featuring a prominent African-American literary artist.
Last year the Urban League of Lancaster County and the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce presented Jackson with the Champions of Diversity Award for her work in improving relationships among diverse groups and empowering individuals.
