Celebrate Earth Day at HACC's Lancaster Campus

Wildlife expert Jack Hubley to speak at annual event
April 13, 2012
LANCASTER – Lancaster County’s resident wildlife expert Jack Hubley will bring his Birds of Prey presentation to the HACC's Lancaster Campus for its annual Earth Day Celebration on April 18.
Hubley, a wildlife speaker for 30 years and host of WGAL-TV’s “Wild Moment” on the Friday evening news, will get up close and personal with his live owls and hawks at a noon presentation on the stage in East Building, room 203.
The Earth Day celebration, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free and open to the public. Other events include cockroach races, presented by the North Museum in Lancaster; free tethered hot air balloon rides by Windjammers Hot Air Balloons in the North Lot (weather permitting) and free chair massages in the atrium. Matt Cleveland, the “Green DJ” from Occasional Disc Jockeys, will be on hand along with a Chevy Volt electric car. Phi Theta Kappa will hold a plant sale featuring perennials and annuals, and the Lancaster Campus Music Club will be selling bowls made out of recycled record albums.
Event goers will have the chance to vote for their favorite Earth Day p photography contest entry from among entries on display in the East Building lobby. This year’s theme is water and features photographs of snow, ice, rain, rivers and oceans.
The Lancaster Campus is collecting jeans for the Cotton from Blue to Green denim drive. Collection bins will be available in the East Building lobby. Denim collected by the drive is converted to insulation for use in low-income housing across the nation. The campus hopes to collect at least 500 pairs of jeans, which is enough to insulate one house, said Heberlein, president of the campus Environmental Science Club.
Other featured participants include the Allies Club, Dart Container, B.B. Bellezza, Fresco Green & Green Scene, Garden Party Soapworks, Hundru Chevrolet, Lancaster County Beekeepers Society and Save Speedwell Forge. Herr Foods will provide free potato chips and Rita’s Italian Ice will offer free ice, courtesy of the Lancaster Campus Student Government Association. OfficeMax, Ten Thousand Villages, HACC Massage Therapy program, Lancaster Campus Bookstore and Occasions Disc Jockeys are providing “green” giveaways and services.
“This event is always well attended,” Heberlein said. “We usually have 300 to 500 people, including people from the community who stop by the campus to see what’s going on.”
