Golf tournament provides scholarships to HACC students

Annual fundraiser set for Sept. 24 at Hershey Country Club
Aug. 27, 2012
HARRISBURG – Golfers will have a chance to tee-off for a good cause when the Frank J. Dixon Tournament for Scholarships at HACC returns to Hershey Country Club on Monday, Sept. 24.
Organizers of the 2012 event hope to raise $150,000 to benefit students in need  at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Those funds will support students at the HACC campuses in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, York and the Virtual Campus.
Since its inception in 1996, the annual event has become one of the premiere charitable golf tournaments in Central Pennsylvania, drawing scores of golfers from across HACC’s 10-county region, with sponsors raising more than $1.4 million in new scholarships over the previous 16 years of the tournament.
“I’m privileged to be able to work with the tournament and all the dedicated people whose generosity makes a college education possible for deserving HACC students,” said Frank J. Dixon, the tournament’s namesake. “I’m extremely grateful for the career opportunities we give to many students through education and training.”
Tanner Swarr, among the many students who receive a golf scholarship, is a recent graduate from Eastern York High School. She used a scholarship offered by HACC’s financial aid office to supplement her financial aid package. Swarr is in her first semester at HACC, studying social work as a full-time student and works full-time at the York Galleria.
On the day of the outing, golfers will get a chance to meet HACC students who have benefited from scholarship funds in the past, giving them a sense of how their contributions impact the lives of students.
The deadline for golfers to register is Monday, Sept. 10, 2012. Sponsors also are welcome to participate. Program booklet advertisements are due Friday, Sept. 7, 2012.
The tournament will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Hershey Country Club East Course, 1000 East Derry Road, Hershey. Golfers play in foursomes using a scramble format. Players register at 10 a.m. They can bid on silent auction items and have a buffet lunch at 11 a.m. before the shotgun start at noon. An awards ceremony and reception will be held at 5:30 p.m.
Businesses and individuals interested in sponsoring a team or becoming a sponsor of the tournament may contact Lynne Dillard at the HACC Foundation, 717-780-2363 or ledillar@hacc.edu.
