Holocaust survivor to visit HACC's York Campus

Public invited to attend free event on April 18
April 9, 2012
YORK – Severin Fayerman, a survivor of five German concentration camps during World War II, will share his life’s experiences at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Arthur J. Glatfelter Community Room in the Cytec building, 2161 Pennsylvania Ave., on HACC’s York Campus.
He is the author of “Survivor’s Story: The Personal Memoirs of Severin Fayerman,” which details his incredible journey from the nightmare of Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps to founding a successful business in America.
The public is invited to attend this free lecture, which is sponsored by the campus Student Government Association (SGA).
Fayerman, 90, also is the founder of the Reading-based Baldwin Hardware, a premier maker of hand-crafted residential and commercial hardware. Customers have included President Eisenhower and later, First Lady Jackie Kennedy.
Fayerman was born in 1922 in Bendzin, Poland. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, the life of the 17-year-old Fayerman changed forever. His family’s factory was seized by the Germans, his family arrested and sent to forced labor camps.
Severin became separated from his family. He endured captivity in concentration camps, including Auschwitz where he was assigned the grueling work of digging ditches to bury the remains and ashes of those who were gassed and cremated there.
After surviving the horrors of Nazi Germany, his family was reunited and they secured passage to America, arriving at Ellis Island, N.Y., in 1945. Within a year, the family purchased Baldwin Tool and Die Co. in Newark, N.J., to re-start the family business with Severin Fayerman as founder of Baldwin Hardware. The business opened on Jan. 2, 1946. A decade later, the company moved to Reading.
Fayerman will sign copies of his book at the presentation.
