Dr. Dan Shapiro to speak Sept. 24, 2013, at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus HARRISBURG, Pa. – Dr. Dan Shapiro, author, consultant for “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice” and TV host, will open the 2013-14 Honors Studies lectures at HACC, Central  Pennsylvania’s Community College.

Shapiro will present “Consulting for Television: Creating and Killing Stigma” on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at 3 p.m. in the Rose Lehrman Art Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Shapiro is a psychologist who brings broad experience as a clinician and expertise with a story.  On “Grey’s Anatomy,” Shapiro assists with the representations of therapy and mental health issues in an accurate manner while helping writers and producers achieve the dramatic arcs they require. He also has served as a consultant with hired and regular television actors as they developed sophisticated, multi-dimensional portrayals.  

Shapiro also co-starred in eight episodes of National Geographic’s landmark show, "Great American Manhunt," which aired in spring 2012. He also was featured in “Dark Matters,” a Discovery Channel series, and “Life, Part Two” on PBS. 

Shapiro is the author of nonfiction books including “Mom’s Marijuana,” “Delivering Doctor Amelia,” and his latest work, “And in Health: A Guide for Couples Facing Cancer Together.”  He also has written for the New York Times, JAMA, Salon, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Cure Magazine, and others. His essays have been featured on National Public Radio's “All Things Considered.”
