HACC's York Campus to show 'Soul Food Junkies' documentary

Film examines traditions and cultural relevance
Oct. 23, 2013
YORK, Pa. –The documentary “Soul Food Junkies,” will be shown at HACC-York Campus Thursday, Nov. 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Arthur J. Glatfelter Community Room in the Cytec Building on the campus at 2161 Pennsylvania Ave.

In the film, award-winning director Byron Hurt explores the tradition of soul food, its relevance to black cultural identity and its continued popularity despite the dangers associated with diets high in calories and fat. Hurt demonstrates how socioeconomic conditions paired with economic choices of the food industry limit food choice and accessibility in many predominately black neighborhoods. Historians, cooks, physicians and food justice movement activists share their views as Hurt weaves together a story of his experiences compared with cultural and identity politics, culinary advocacy and food innovation.

Hurt is known for his documentaries such as “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhythms” and the award-winning underground film, “I Am a Man: Black Masculinity in America andMoving Memories: The Black Senior Video Yearbook.”

After “Soul Food Junkies,” there will be a short dialogue focusing on issues addressed in the film facilitated by Errol Wizda, coordinator of Student Life and Multicultural Programs, which is offering the program with the student club Black Student Union.
