HACC Hires Associate Provost for Workforce and Community Development
 
Victor Rodgers has been named associate provost for workforce and community development, HACC, which includes the College’s noncredit programs and services. Rodgers, who began his role on Sept. 29, 2014, was hired following a national search.
 
Rodgers is responsible for the leadership and supervision of the unit and will supervise the marketing and sales of all workforce functions, including research and continuous improvement of existing and new programs.
 
HACC annually serves more than 29,000 students in its noncredit unit, which includes public safety, adult basic education, corporate training and continuing education offered at all campuses and many off-site locations in Central Pennsylvania.  
 
Rodgers comes to HACC from Guam Community College (GCC) where he served as the assistant director for continuing education and workforce development and managed workforce development activities on Guam and in Micronesia. He previously was direct services director of the Mid-East Commission where he was responsible for managing workforce investment programs in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Rodgers, a U.S. Navy veteran, also served as a manager and human resources specialist in the Navy where he focused on training and professional development activities. He earned four Navy Commendation Medals for personnel management and the Golden Anchor Retention Excellence Award for excellence in human resource programs.
 
In addition, Rodgers has consistently sought to integrate workforce development into business and community needs, serving as a Chamber of Commerce chair, a member of several business associations and as a leader on the state workforce investment board. He also represented Guam as a member of the National Governors Association team.
 
Rodgers, a native of New York who grew up in North Carolina, earned a master’s degree in business administration and a master of arts in business communications, both from Jones International University in Centennial, Colorado, and holds a bachelor of science in human resources management from Park University in Parkville, Missouri.
 
 
HACC Ushers in 2014-15 Academic Year with 50^th Anniversary Celebration
 
HACC President John J. “SKI” Sygielski, Ed.D., welcomed the beginning of a new academic year in a 50^th anniversary Convocation ceremony on Sept. 19, 2014.
 
During his remarks, Dr. Ski shared his vision for the College for the coming year and beyond. “Each of us has the potential every day to positively impact the lives of hundreds of students. But we must meet them where they are and help them successfully navigate times of change and uncertainty – utilizing what works best for them.”

“We vowed through our strategic plan to work to make HACC a place of teaching and learning excellence, to recruit a growing and more diverse community of learners and employees, to make HACC an employer of choice, to be a responsible steward of our financial and natural resources, to operate in an open and transparent manner, to be guided by civility, and to promote and encourage innovation throughout the College. We are well on our way to achieving those goals,” said Dr. Ski.
 
 
HACC Receives More Than $1.9 Million in Grants
 
Grants totaling $1,909,191 have been awarded to five programs that benefit students and educators at HACC.
 
The programs, funders, grant totals and purposes are:

The Perkins program is designed to improve completion rates for career and technical education students at the postsecondary level.
Healthcare Scholarships	Partnership for Better Health	$10,000	The grant will provide scholarship support for students from the Partnership’s service area who are enrolled in HACC’s nurse aide training program.
Keystone Education Yields Success (KEYS)	Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare	$434,553	The KEYS program supports HACC students who receive Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF) and food stamps. Participating students receive career counseling, tutoring and academic support, and support services through their respective County Assistance Office. The KEYS program also helps to connect students to services within the community.
Pennsylvania Keys Training	Pennsylvania Early Learning Keys to Quality program	$189,420	Through its workforce development division, HACC provides a workshop series that may count toward Pennsylvania ACT 48 continuing education credits required for Pennsylvania teachers of infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children. Participants may earn up to three college credits. The grant also supports nationally-recognized Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and Pennsylvania-recognized School Age Professional Credential (SAPC) training for teachers of infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children. To participate in Pennsylvania Keys training at HACC, teachers must register at www.pakeys.org.

 
 
HACC Names Students to Part-Time Dean’s List
 
HACC has named 2,544 part-time students to the dean’s list for the 2013-14 academic year.
 
The dean’s list recognizes part-time students that attend any of the college’s five campuses in Harrisburg, Gettysburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York, or are enrolled in online classes, who complete a total of 12 or more college-level credits beginning the fall semester and ending the second summer term, were never a full-time student during that time period and have earned a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

HACC Theatre Presents ‘Veronica’s Room’ During a Season of Mystery, Music and Memory
 
HACC Theatre presents “Veronica’ Room,” a mystery thriller by “Rosemary’s Baby” author Ira Levin, Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2014, at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus.
 
HACC Theatre’s 2014-15 “Season of Mystery, Music and Memory” will offer an array of theatrical styles: a Halloween mystery in “Veronica’s Room”; a mid-winter musical, “Godspell”; and in the spring, a Holocaust memory in “And Then They Came For Me.”
 
This chilling play, directed by Dave Olmsted, theatre instructor, explores the thin line between fantasy and reality, madness and murder. Students Susan and Larry, guests at the Brabissant mansion, are drawn into the impersonation of the Brabissant’s dead daughter, Veronica. Once dressed in Veronica's clothes, Susan finds herself locked in the role and locked in Veronica’s room. Or is she Veronica, in 1935, pretending to be an imaginary Susan?
 
The cast of “Veronica's Room” includes Mabel Schreffler as “woman,” Joshua Dieter as “man,” Erin Anderson as “girl” and Neil Grover as “young man.”
 
“Veronica’s Room” will be performed for the public on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. The student night performance is Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m., when all tickets will be $5 with valid student ID. Tickets for all other performances are $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students.

Cirk La Putyka’s “Slapstick Sonata” Hits the Live at Rose Lehrman Stage on Nov. 5
 
The Live at Rose Lehrman artist series presents Cirk La Putyka’s “Slapstick Sonata” on Nov. 5, 2014, at 7 p.m. in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus.
 
This group of late-night laborers from the Czech Republic will entertain the audience with acrobatics, color, humor, movement and just plain silliness! The show features a cast of dancers, actors and mimes bringing physical comedy and contemporary circus set to the music of Mozart, Handel and others.

‘Love is Not Abuse’ Domestic Violence Program Hosted by HACC’s Gettysburg Campus
 
HACC’s Gettysburg Campus will present “Love is Not Abuse” in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The program will be offered on two dates:

• Oct. 21 from 6-8 p.m.
• Oct. 22 from 1:15-2:30 p.m.

The first six weeks of a semester are often known as the “red zone” due to the increase of sexual assault and harassment cases reported by college students. In order to raise awareness of and help prevent sexually based acts of discrimination or violence, the College is offering this program in partnership with Survivors, Inc. to HACC students, employees and the community.

Millersville Artist to Exhibit at HACC’s Lancaster Campus
 
Robert Andriulli will display his works, “Painterly Drawings,” in the Art Space in the East Building of the Lancaster Campus from Nov. 3-Dec. 10, 2014.
 
A reception for the artist will be held Nov. 4 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Hours of the exhibit are Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.
 
“The drawings in this exhibition represent a wide range of subjects and ideas I’ve pursued in my artistic endeavors over the past three decades. All of the works are studio creations that evolve from other drawings and paintings created from direct observations, memory, invention, photos and discoveries made in the act of drawing,” said Andriulli, a professor of art at Millersville University. “Central to the work is the exploration of the formal and expressive possibilities of a subject as revealed through the use of this particular medium and the language of art. What they share in common is my continued interest in seeking a visual equivalent that unites my experiences, musings and imagination.”
 
Andriulli received a bachelor’s degree from William Paterson College of New Jersey in Newark, New Jersey, in 1975 and an MFA in painting from Penn State University in 1978. He formerly taught at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine; Seton Hall University in Orange, New Jersey; and Penn State University.
 
Andriulli has exhibited extensively over the past 25 years, including numerous shows in Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Among the awards he has earned are Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1987 and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in 1979 and 1985. His work is represented in numerous corporate and private collections and has been exhibited in solo shows at the Lancaster Museum of Art (1998) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; the Westmoreland Museum of Art (1988) in Greensburg, Pennsylvania; and the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland (2001). He has also participated in group museum shows, including the Ogunquit Museum of Art, the Bates College Museum of Art and the Colby College Museum of Art, all in Maine.
