The exhibit "Tracings" by Brant Schuller of Lancaster will run March 13 through April 27. A reception will be held March 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m., in East Room 203 of the Lancaster Campus of HACC at 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike.
"I like to watch television but often feel as though I have not retained anything from the time I've spent as a spectator, and this troubles me," said Schuller. "Therefore, I decided to document this pastime by tracing what I watch. I set up simple parameters for this body of work. I tape a sheet of vellum to the front of the television and using a graphite pencil I trace, as best I can, the edges of the forms that are moving in front of me," Schuller explained.
He has been developing "tracings" for the last six years, including some in January 2006 when the Museum of Contemporary Art of Atlanta, GA, invited him to draw 24 hours of Cable Network News (CNN) while in a gallery at the museum.
He also has made a series of prints based upon the landscape tracings he has created either by walking or driving through a particular, changing environment. To these he has experimented with the addition of hand-painted color.
Schuller holds a master's of fine arts degree in printmaking from The Pennsylvania State University and a bachelor's of fine arts degree in printmaking from The Cleveland Institute of Art. He currently is associate professor or art at Millersville University.
