June 14-17 sessions can help prepare for college
May 27, 2010
Harrisburg, PA – Next year’s high school seniors can start preparing for college at a free College Readiness Workshop June 14-17, at the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Students can choose between sessions from 9 a.m.-noon or 3-6 p.m. on the campus on One HACC Drive.
“The workshop includes taking a practice placement test and then reviewing the results,” said Joanna Stoms, HACC’s College in the High School coordinator. “That way we can help students strengthen their math and English skills so they can be further prepared for their actual college placement exam.”
Sessions also will cover study skills, time management and understanding college expectations in the classroom.
HACC math and English faculty will also introduce how to use HACC iTunes U in the classroom as an instructional resource. The iTunes U site was developed by Apple to deliver educational content; many courses can be downloaded free-of-charge and can be accessed by anyone with a computer and Internet access.
In addition to the four-day workshop for rising high school seniors, a one-day session on Tuesday, June 15, is designated for high school mathematics and English teachers and guidance counselors. The group will review placement test scores, test preparation, developmental math and English curriculum and college expectations.
“High school teachers and guidance counselors can gain a general understanding of these strategies and be aware of the college expectations that they can share with their students,” said Stoms.
The workshop is funded through a grant from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Career and Technical Education in conjunction with the South Central Pennsylvania Tech Prep Consortium.
Students must bring photo identification to the first session. To register for the College Readiness Workshop or for further information, contact Stoms at the Harrisburg Campus, 221-1788 or e-mail jpstoms@hacc.edu.
