The Best of HACC’s Art Students’ Work Featured in Honors Exhibit
 
An annual honors art exhibit featuring the best work of art students at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will be on display at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery during April and May 2016.
 
The first show will be on display April 8-20 and feature the best student works of photography, computer art and digital photo imaging, 3D design, 2D design, sculpture, illustration and printmaking. A reception for the artists will be held in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on April 14 from 5:30-7 p.m.
 
The second show will be on display April 25-May 6 and will include the best student works of graphic design, drawing, painting, glass, ceramics and jewelry. A reception for the artists will be held in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on April 28 from 5:30-7 p.m.
 
Nearly 500 works were submitted by students for consideration. Art faculty juried the submissions and selected the best works for each section of the honors exhibit. Awards will be presented during both receptions.
 
HACC has an active art department with approximately 400 art majors and a large number of students who are nonmajors. HACC’s Art Department offers courses in traditional media such as painting, drawing, photography and ceramics. Classes are also offered in glass blowing, jewelry and typography. At HACC, students may elect to take a transfer major such as fine arts or art and design or may elect to take a career program such as photography or graphic design.
 
The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery is located on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. All Rose Lehrman Art Gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. or by appointment.
 
 

Celebrate National Poetry Month with HACC’s Lancaster Campus
 
In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is hosting Richard Kearns, Harrisburg City’s current Poet Laureate and faculty member of HACC’s English Department, and Jeffrey Ihlenfeldt, fiction writer and HACC professor of English, for a poetry and fiction reading on April 26, 2016, from 7-9 p.m.
 
The public is encouraged to attend this free event and bring poems or very short stories to read in the open reading session following the featured readers.
 
Kearns holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Millersville University and a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University School of Journalism. He is a poet, freelance writer and musician of Puerto Rican and European background. He was appointed Harrisburg City’s Poet Laureate in 2014, and his poems have appeared in anthologies, including “I Was Indian (before being Indian was cool)” and  “El Coro/A Chorus of Latino and Latina Poetry,” and literary reviews, such as The Massachusetts Review, Letras, Painted Bride Quarterly and Chicago Review. He has published two full collections: Street of Knives and Rufino's Secret, as well as chapbooks: Boricua In Between, Jazz Poems, Endtime Poems and The Body of My Isla. 
 
Ihlenfeldt holds an MFA from Goddard College and teaches writing and literature at HACC’s Lancaster Campus. His short stories have appeared in many publications including Story Quarterly, Southern Humanities Review, Columbia Review Ascent, Quiddity and Worcester Review.  He was named finalist for the 2010 and 2012 Fulton Prize in Short Fiction and has been nominated for Best of the Net. He has been a writer-in-residence at a number of writers’ colonies, including Writers Omi at Ledig House in New York and the Artcroft Center for Arts and Humanities in Kentucky.
