An upcoming workshop offered by HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, aims to help first-time college-bound Latino students make the transition to higher education.

"A Guide to College Success" will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, in Room 214 of Whitaker Hall on the Harrisburg Campus. The event is co-sponsored by HACC and Estamos Unidos de Pennsylvania, a grassroots organization in Harrisburg that reaches out to the Latino community.

"We started running the workshop last year and had a great turnout," said Yolanda Perez, counseling professor at HACC and Estamos Unidos de Pennsylvania education committee chairwoman.

The workshop "is an excellent opportunity for Latinos and others who may be apprehensive about starting college to talk with Latino professionals who have their college degree and find out where they found support and encouragement that helped them succeed," Perez said.

In addition, HACC faculty, staff and students will offer success tips, including how to get good grades, and participate in a question-and-answer session. Those who attend also will receive a pamphlet that includes the 10 steps to good grades, courtesy of Members First Credit Union.
