Student activities planned April 19-22 also support Earth Day

GETTYSBURG – A number of community and business organizations that promote or practice eco-friendly processes are joining HACC organizations during an Earth Day Fair from 12:30-5:30 p.m. Monday, April 19, at the HACC-Gettysburg Campus.
The event not only celebrates Earth Day but is among a series of community and campus events planned as part of HACC-Gettysburg Campus’ year-long 20th Anniversary celebration, “20 Ways to Say Thank You” to community, business and industry partners who have contributed to the success of the campus.
The fair is free and open to the public.
Among the exhibitors is Adams Electric Cooperative, which will bring the nation’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The new material-handling vehicle, a bucket truck that uses about half the fuel of a non-hybrid truck, sports a hybrid color scheme and signage that makes it a rolling billboard for Adams Electric. Final assembly of the truck was done in nearby York. DUECO, Inc., in conjunction with ODYNE Corp., developed the PHEV propulsion system for the vehicle that minimizes fuel use and emissions found in a typical aerial lift truck.
Participating exhibitors with displays also include Adams County Conservation District, “Protect Water Sources;” Adams County Environmental Service; Adams County Farmers Market, “Farm to Chef;” Gettysburg Solar, solar panel and information; HACC Green Technology, portable wind machine and display; HACC-Gettysburg Campus, “Best Management Practices,” self-guided walking tour, carbon footprint quiz; Hundredfold Farms; Land Conservancy of Adams County; Mason Dixon Farms Dairy; McClarin Plastics; Penn State Extension Office, “Ag Innovations;” The Ragged Edge Coffee House, “Shop Local/Buy Local;” Rice Fruit Co., “Green roof technology;” Rick Gilbert, “Geothermal Demonstrations;” Seasons Bakery, “Shop Local/Buy Local;” Shop Local/Buy Local with flyers from Weikert’s Egg Farm and Walker Goat Farm; Roy Thomas, “Composting/Recycling;” and the Watershed Alliance of Adams County.
The public also is invited to view exhibits on display in recognition of Earth Day. Nature photographs; “Junk Rocker,” a seven-foot recycled metal piece; “Rocket Ring for Elton John,” a small sculpture of found objects; and original drawings by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh all are part of the free exhibit that runs through Thursday, April 22. A reception to meet the artists will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Monday, April 19, during the Earth Day Fair.
A number of student organizations on campus have planned Earth Day events, starting with the biannual Adopt-A-Highway clean up from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 17, sponsored by the Environmental Club.
During Earth Day week, April 19-22, the Environmental Club is sponsoring an eco-friendly fundraiser by encouraging students, faculty and staff to bring in soda can tabs and deposit them in containers around campus. All proceeds benefit the Adams County SPCA.
Students also are encouraged to take a “Carbon Footprint” quiz at computer stations in The HUB to see how much “nature” is required to support one’s lifestyle. They also can take self-guided tours of the “Best Management Practices” that include highlights of sustainability efforts on the HACC-Gettysburg Campus.
Professor Heidi Marker’s students in Physical Science 114 will conduct water quality testing in Rock Creek as a lab activity, and share the data with the Adams County Conservation District.
The Earth Day Committee has posted “What you can do to be green” on the bulletin board in the glass promenade hallway.
