GETTYSBURG – “Mytho/Logical,” a new exhibit in the gallery hallway of the HACC- Gettysburg Campus, features the multi-media work of Maryland artist Julie Maynard.
The exhibit will continue through Dec. 14, 2012. A reception for the artist is scheduled for 2:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at the campus, 731 Old Harrisburg Road. The community is invited to meet Maynard and learn more about her work.
Maynard’s work can be described as a form of painting with paper on two- or three- dimensional surfaces. Her multi-media collages often use advertisements and illustrations torn from magazines and catalogues. They feature gradually built-up layers that incorporate bits and pieces picked up along river and city streets. These ‘found’ objects add texture and shadow lines to her work.
Many of Maynard’s three-dimensional pieces also begin with a shape from nature, like a bird or a leaf, cut from wood. Second and third layers of wood often include one that is painted and one in an abstract shape.
To describe “Mytho/Logical,” Maynard said, “Once upon a time, myths were tales we told to explain the world around us. These stories were often populated with animals who took a curious interest in human doings.”
She added that in her work, “An owl is both a hunter and an observer of the hunt. A cat is both inside the dream and outside watching the dreamer.”

Maynard’s recent credits include “Train Wrecks,” a one-person show at The Artists’ Gallery, Frederick, Md., and a showing at the 80th Annual Cumberland Valley Artists Exhibition, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (WCMFA), Md. She won the Maryland Metals, Inc. Cash Award for Outstanding 3-Dimensional/Sculptural Work of Art at the WCMFA show.
Maynard is a member of The Artists’ Gallery in Frederick. In addition to her career as an artist, she also is editor and publisher of two small weekly newspapers.
