Medical Student is First Member of His Family to Pursue College
HACC invites individuals like Edward Edris to take the first step on June 9, 2015
Edward Edris, HACC alumnus and now a first-year medical student at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine, is studying to become an osteopathic physician. He was the first member of his family to pursue higher education. “This [HACC] was my first step on a journey that took me to bigger and greater things than I ever imagined. HACC was a place where I could begin my education as a working adult who was going through a career change.”
HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is the first step for many students – from high school students to adults with children – who are ready to make a change. On June 9, 2015, from 1-7 p.m., HACC’s five campuses in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York invite you to attend the One-Stop enrollment events, take the first step and enroll in HACC’s fall classes. In one day, you can complete the entire process of enrolling or take the first steps. To complete the entire process, allow four to five hours and arrive by 2 p.m. If you have previously earned college credit(s), please bring your college transcript(s) to the event. You can:
- Complete the application
- Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Many students mistakenly think they won't be eligible for financial aid, but most do qualify for some type of educational funding.
- Learn about the approximately 250 scholarships supported by the HACC Foundation
- Complete a placement test to determine the level of classes that will best meet your needs in English and math
- Attend a new student orientation to learn about HACC’s services such as tutoring and counseling
- Meet with academic advisors to choose classes that can be taken online and/or in the classroom
Additionally, thanks to the HACC Foundation, future students may enter a drawing to win $1,000 for HACC tuition at the One-Stop enrollment event at each campus. The winners of the tuition giveaways can use the free money for HACC tuition, books and fees during the fall 2015 and/or spring 2016 terms.
“HACC was an accessible and affordable option for me. The online classes afforded me a great amount of flexibility and allowed me to care for a patient on the West Coast while continuing my education in my home town,” Edris said.
Following his graduation from HACC, Edris continued on to Dickinson College, where he was accepted with scholarships from Phi Theta Kappa and earned his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience.

$500 for Tuition to Be Given Away at HACC’s Trades Career Night
HACC’s York Campus will give $500 to one future student interested in enrolling and expanding skills in HVAC, automotive or other trades
HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is inviting individuals to attend Trades Career Night to learn the options for expanding their skills or earning an associate degree, certificate or diploma in the trades, including but not limited to: HVAC, electrical, automotive and mechatronics. The Trades Career Night will be held at HACC’s York Campus on June 17, 2015, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Future students should visit hacc.edu/ProgramDays by June 16, 2015 to register.
HACC offers classes in the evenings and on Saturdays and the ability to earn a diploma in the trades in three terms. Future students can attend Trades Career Night to learn more. During the event, attendees will:
- Watch demonstrations of computer simulation programs and soldering copper tubing
- Tour the lab facilities to see the equipment students use to gain hands-on experience
- Learn options for financial aid and scholarships
- Meet faculty with more than 20 years of experience in HVAC installation and servicing
- Learn how to enroll and register for classes
Thanks to the HACC Foundation, a drawing will be held for future students to win a $500 tuition giveaway. The tuition giveaway may be used for tuition and fees at HACC during the fall 2015 or spring 2016 terms.

Steelcase Active Learning Grant Awarded to HACC
HACC among two community colleges nationwide tapped for the two-year project
HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is one of two community colleges nationwide to receive an active learning grant from Steelcase Education. The initiative empowers educators to implement active learning strategies by leveraging classroom space.
HACC is among 12 schools and universities out of 540 applications that were chosen for their unique approaches to active learning.
This two-year grant, valued at $50,000 for furnishing and installation, will allow HACC to outfit a classroom at its Lancaster Campus for the fall 2015 term with active learning furniture that allows students to easily rearrange the classroom.
This grant will allow HACC’s Lancaster Campus to model a classroom design that complements innovative teaching practices encouraged by faculty participation in HACC’s Centers for Innovation and Teaching Excellence (CITE) workshops and innovative online and blended learning training courses. HACC’s Lancaster Campus has the oldest and one of the most active CITEs of HACC’s five campuses. CITEs provide HACC with innovative faculty training needed to achieve student success through active and collaborative learning.
As part of this grant, HACC will create eight, three-to-five-minute QuickTip videos demonstrating best practices in collaborative classrooms. The College will publish these videos on its YouTube channel for both internal and external audiences.
More Than 900 Students Graduate in HACC’s Spring 2015 Commencement Ceremony
More than 900 students at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, completed their associate degrees, certificates or diplomas during the spring 2015 term. The graduates were celebrated during HACC’s Commencement ceremony, held May 16, 2015, at the Giant Center in Hershey.

24 Students Graduate from the Nursing Program at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus
Students celebrated in pinning ceremony
Associate degree graduates in HACC’s registered nursing program were honored with their nursing pins during a ceremony on May 7, 2015, at the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
The 24 graduates successfully completed their clinical nursing education, which qualifies them to take licensure exams to become registered nurses (RNs).
Graduates Amber Mahon and Kristen Moran provided a greeting for the pinning ceremony. Petra Hayden-Wisnewski served as the student speaker. The following graduates were recognized during the ceremony:

Adams County Resident Joins HACC Foundation Board
Shupe, a 2014 HACC alumnus, will serve through June 30, 2018. She will represent the Gettysburg Campus on the HACC Foundation Board. At HACC, she earned two associate degrees – one in 2006 and one in 2014.
Missy is a health coach and medical assistant for Wellspan. In her leadership, volunteer and fundraising roles, she has served as chairperson for Citizens Committee of Tyrone Township, United Way volunteer, Adams County Children’s Advocacy Center volunteer, task force member for tobacco cessation in Adams County and an annual volunteer for the Pink Out to help local women with breast cancer in Hanover.
As a HACC graduate, Missy believes that the College is a huge part of the community. She wants to be part of the HACC Foundation to “help it grow and spread its wings even further.”
