HACC Holds 108^th Police Academy Class Graduation
 
The Sen. Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Complex of the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center (PSC) at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, recently celebrated the graduation of 43 cadets in its 108^th municipal police academy class. HACC’s Police Academy is the second largest in Pennsylvania and offers the 20-week basic training course mandated for all Pennsylvania municipal police officers.

Several of the graduating cadets also received outstanding achievement awards at the ceremony on Nov. 24, 2015, at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. The award recipients are:

• Cadet Andrew Stager, most inspirational cadet

HACC to Offer New Online Building Construction Management Program
 
Starting in fall 2016, HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will offer an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in building construction management. This program can be accomplished completely online. HACC is the only community college in the state to offer this program completely online.
 
According to the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), construction employment has steadily increased to its highest level since 2009 and should continue to rise. PayScale.com data for 2015-16 indicates that an associate degree in construction management is one of the highest earning two-year degrees.
 
HACC’s online Building Construction Management Program will give students the tools to succeed in this growing field and teach them how to manage the construction process from start to finish, estimate quantities and costs for a project, interpret construction documents and building codes, apply principles of construction accounting and more. A background in construction is helpful but it isn’t necessary.
 
The program is designed to be flexible enough so students can transfer credits to a wide variety of colleges and universities with no loss of credit. Students may also pursue a bachelor’s degree in technical leadership through HACC’s articulation agreement with Bloomsburg University.

Youth Can Learn to Fly Drones at HACC’s “Discover Engineering” Day
 
Youth ages 7-12 are invited to learn how to fly drones and compete in a fun hands-on exercise during “Discover Engineering” at HACC’s Midtown Trade and Technology Center on Feb. 20, 2016, from 9 a.m.-noon.
 
Students will learn safety techniques, the mechanisms of propulsion and the engineering theory of flight with the task of designing a drone. Teams will compete against one another to be the first to maneuver their drone through an obstacle course for an award.
The cost is $49 per student for this popular program. Each student will receive a 3-D printed drone replica and recommended drone product list for purchase.
 
This event is sponsored by HACC’s Engineering Club and led by Kimberly Ketelsleger, club adviser and engineering professor.
